Chamber awards scholarships, grants
By Murphy Chamber of Commerce
Four scholarships and two grants were awarded by the Murphy Chamber of Commerce at the June luncheon. It brings the total scholarships awarded to $20,000, said Jon Lashbrook, Murphy Chamber Education Director and Scholarship Foundation Chairman.
"We're very proud of how we've grown our scholarship awards," Lashbrook said. "It was exciting to award teacher grants for the first time this year too, and recognize those who educate our children."
In another first this year, one of the Plano ISD attendance zone seniors attended private school rather than public.
"I think it's super that Weston found our scholarship," Lashbrook said. "As long as you're a Murphy resident, whether you attend private or public school or are home-schooled, you're eligible to apply for the Chamber scholarship."
Two Murphy seniors in the Plano ISD attendance zone and two Murphy seniors in the Wylie ISD attendance zone were awarded scholarships: one $1,000 and one $1,500 award in each ISD. One teacher in each district (teaching in a Murphy feeder pattern school) was awarded a $500 grant.
In the Plano ISD attendance zone, T.C. Riley, a Plano East Senior High School senior, was awarded a $1,500 scholarship. He plans on attending the University of Texas at Austin to study biology on a pre-med track.
Weston Betts, a Canyon Creek Christian Academy senior, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. He plans on attending Texas Tech University and studying marketing communications.
In the Wylie ISD attendance zone, Wylie High School senior Hayley Hamilton was awarded a $1,500 scholarship. She plans on attending Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas and majoring in biochemistry in the pre-med program. Wylie High School senior Sarah Moore was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. She plans on attending the University of North Texas and wants to study either construction engineering technology or communication design. Representatives from the Plano ISD Education Foundation and the Wylie ISD Education Foundation accepted teacher grant checks for $500 each. Teachers will submit grant applications detailing a specific project. One will be selected and awarded the grant. "Preference will be given to a business- or environment-related project," Lashbrook said. For more information about the Murphy Chamber Scholarship Foundation, contact Lashbrook at 972-633-9919.

Jennie Lawson from the Wylie ISD Education Foundation accepted the $500 grant for a Wylie ISD teacher in a Murphy feeder pattern school.
