Murphy Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Program

What organization in Murphy has awarded $31000 to Murphy graduates and their exceptional teachers since 2005? If you said the Murphy Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Foundation, you would be right, and that organization is proud to announce that it is upping its awards for 2013 to $7000! This year, the 4 scholarships awarded will all be at the $1500 level, totaling $6000, and the Teacher Grants will remain at $500 into both PISD and WISD.

The Chamber and its Foundation has been awarding scholarships since 2005 and has gradually increased both the size and number of awards over the years and added the Teacher Grants in 2011. Chamber Education Director and Foundation Chairman Jon Lashbrook said, "We are so proud of what we've done over the years, and I still maintain that of all the great things our Chamber does, the Scholarship Foundation is the best we do for the community of Murphy and its citizens. It is due to a lot of hard work by our volunteer core and the generosity of our membership and area businesses that we are able to announce this increase in our awards. It is our goal to one day award $10000 annually-we're at $7k now, so we need to develop other channels, and not lose any of our existing donors, to get there." If you want to donate, or have suggestions for improvement, Lashbrook invites your attention.

In an effort to raise funds, the Foundation is currently raffling off a cruise for 2! Cruise Planner's Sherry Pace is working with the Foundation to offer this fantastic getaway opportunity. Lashbrook says that his group is selling only 250 chances at $10 a piece! Some lucky someone will have their ticket drawn and win $1000 towards a cruise of their choosing! Sherry Pace said she looks forward to working with the winner to arrange the Carnival cruise of their choice. Ticket sales began February 28 with an initial offering to Chamber members, but Lashbrook stressed that tickets are available to anyone interested at his State Farm Insurance office at 111 S. Murphy Rd. in Murphy. The drawing will occur when all the tickets are sold!
